Magazine Adverts




All these adverts differentiate from each other and give us an idea of just how broader range of magazine adverts they can be, and how they each can achieve different things.
For example the darker colours on the first poster could reflect the genre or meaning behind the album. its not particularly eye catching but the illustrations are definitely the vocal point of the poster, and could attract current fans.
This is in complete contrast to the last poster which is bright and quite bold, its definately eye catching and the illustration would entertain the audience. the text is quite bold noting the tour dates so you could say the text is the vocal point.
These adverts give us ideas of what we could do with ours when we come to make it and what different techniques could achieve different things to make it attractive to the audience.
Our ideas for the magazine advert would be to have the picture as the vocal of the piece. We would carry this out onto our dvd cover as well for a running theme easily recognized. The photo will be memorable or just funny again so the audience wont forget it in a hurry. We aim to use brighter colours for the magazine advert but we are undesided for the DVD cover at the moment.

DigiPack: Album Cover Ideas

In collecting ideas for our album cover, it was necessary to research previous bands album covers from similar genres. Some recognisable artists that promted our ideas were; Foo Fighters



The two photos above from their photoshoot for one of their album covers both highlight their protagonist artist; David Grohl. Also, in both images there is a strong sense of voyeurism. We aim to include both aspects of their photoshoots into ours. We also took ideas for costumes from this band, ie shirt/t-shirt with jeans.

Another band that follows the convensions of an album cover from an alternative rock band are Jimmy Eat World. In their picture below they too centralise their lead artist (normally singer or lead guitarist) who is the 'face' of their band. In researching this band we also came across ideas for lighting our band in their photoshoot. The image in colour shows an idea for possible lighting of the artists.


In conclusion, we've decided not to use a still from our footage as our album cover because it will not feature all the band members and there might not be a strong enough sense of voyeurism. However, we may use our locations to take the photos for our album cover, aside from filming the music video. Our male protagonist (Josef James) will stand in a dominant position in the foreground; closer to the lense, while the other band members feature in the background. This ideas are shown in the test images below.

As a finishing touch for added effect, we thought it would be sucessful if we edited the final image. The two we decided were the most suitable were

1. a wallpaper of The Kooks from http://www.fanpop.com/

2. the following image from a Blink 182 fan page



Finally, we will add a rough texture to the final image to give a look similar to the one from The Kooks picture above, in the hope that this picture will be a recognisable, eye-catching image. In response to all of these conventions we aim to use in our photoshoot, our final picture should be similar to our previous picture (shown above) in a different location (one of our locations for filming) with an edit similar to the one used by The Kooks picture.

DVD cover examples



These are just a few DVD covers we could base ours on, they are of a similar genre and the badns are all young and all have lively videos of which we could relate to ours.
In terms of marketing having photos of the artist will make it highly recognizable and the colours also reflect the differentiation in music played by each band.
We would have the photo of our band as the vocal piece on the front cover, we would maybe have the same picture as the advert to carry on the recognition of the band.

The above Cover is by the band Default. This is The same kind of layout that we are going for but with different settings and maybe a cartoon twist like the above covers.



Above is the In Flames album cover for the Album Come Clarity, I like this cover because of the simpleness, however it is still interesting to look at.
I feel if we combined all the images we have looked at it would make our digi-pack very strong.

General Plan and Ideas.

Firstly we will start off with a band performance at Sawston Village College on the stage. Throughout the video we will cut to this performance. Also we will have a performance in a recording studio that we will cut too. To accompany this we will have a narrative in Cambridge town centre and we get random people to dance to our music and cut away back to the performance. Along with all these ideas we will have random matching visuals that fit to the lyrics.

Goodwin's Theory of Music Videos

Point One - Genre Characteristics
The genre of 'Pacific Ocean' by A is very much Alternative Rock. Characteristics of this genre often include a live performance and sometimes the camera follows the artists in their day-to-day life. This promotes the artists and their 'hometown' as where they live is important to their music. We aim to mimic the genre characteristics of an alternative rock music video in order to make a conventional yet abstract narrative.
Point Two - Relationship between lyrics and visuals
Bands in our genre, such as Sum41 and The Kooks, often use subtle relationships between lyrics and visuals. For example, this image from Sum41's video 'Into Deep' the lyrics are 'Bending over backwards'. We endeavor to illustrate the lyrics by filming what is being said.
Point Three - Relationship between music and visuals
Quite obviously a lot of music videos illustrate the instruments by performing. We will film the performance of the song and therefore we will be incorporating visuals of the music.
Point Four - Need to sell the artist
Simply, for this point we will have huge amounts of footage of the band. By the end of the video the band will be recognizable and noticeable under their title.
Point Five - Intertextuality
We aim to reference Jackass in our video, in that the uneven filming and entertaining footage will correspond.
Point Six - Voyeurism
Our artists will constantly be watching the camera. The shot below, used in Lee Evans XL Tour emphasis's the idea that it is a live, stage performance. Our artists will follow the camera as they perform.

Feedback on Pitch

From evaluating the feedback from our pitch we discovered that the strong areas of our potential music video were the concept of incorporating a performance within a narrative. This appeared to be a successful element of our pitch and would definately draw the attention of viewers. Furthermore, the proposed target audience was said to be very appropriate.
However, our weaknesses were apparent in the research for the location. This will have to benefit from our full attention in the next stage of producing the music video.

Target Audience by Karl

Our products aim to attract an audience of mainly teens and 20+ with the focus being upon existing fans of alternative rock. Our product would probably be featured on Kerrang or MTV 2 because of the genre. We're going to use an experimental style which will draw the audience in because it will be interesting. Also we to attract the audience we will use a variety of colours which will draw are viewers in and make our video eye-catching. We will try to use a certain amount of humour in our products which will make our products more viewable and hopefully keep the audience entertained and keep them watching.

For our music video we are taking inspiration from another video by Blink-182 called "The Rock Show", although we wont have their budget we intent to give the audience entertaining images in an abstract narrative. Our song fits the same genre as this video also and it fits Goodwin's theory of analysis well. Strongly linking the need to sell the artist.

The concept of filming the lifestyle of an artist is stereotypical of alternative rock. We aim to portray the amusing antics of our 'band' in our music video, similarly to the video to The Rock Show. Coincidently, this video also incorporates the performance aspect of an alternative rock band, however, we intend to portray our performance on a stage. Suggesting the artists are performing to a live audience.
So our ideas really to include lots of random clips to make the audience laugh or just enjoy the spontaneous factors of the video to fit with the song, as the upbeat tempo of the song will allow us to fit the music with short bits of footage throughout.
We plan to have varying locations, like town/shops to mess around in which you could link the Avril Lavigne video = Complicated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGXYAJoDWCk.
We will use parallel editing to switch between footage of the performance and various clips of the band. The image below shows the layout of the stage performance we are after. Test footage will later show the stage we're using and the camera angles and movement we hope to achieve.

Our situations will be random, and they wont really link, the only thing that will link the clips together will be the inclusion of the same members in most if not every clip getting up to shenanigans.
Overall we plan to have an upbeat colourful video which reflects the song, it ill be quick paced and will hopefully leave the viewer feeling uplifted or energetic.
